Steps to do the job of a life coach
As a life coach, I work with the core assumption that the client has the answers they are looking for within themselves. The answers may be deeply buried or obscured (perhaps out of fear), but they can be discovered. Often, it just takes asking the right questions.
In fact, a client is their own expert. As their coach, my job is to help them find the answers and believe in their own expertise. Together, we create a synergy that produces the results they seek.
But coaching won’t work if the client is simply looking for someone with a magic wand to make everything they want happen. There are no shortcuts. Instead, there is an expansion of awareness and growth that comes from a process that can seem downright magical when it happens. In fact, that’s why I’m a coach – helping people expand their awareness is my life’s purpose.
But while a coach can bring all of their skills, experience, and various tools to our partnership, the client must be ready and willing to do the work. Coaching is a partnership.
Creating readiness
This is a crucial first step. The client must be willing to participate—and willing to do the work to create the change they say they want. They will likely have to challenge themselves to move beyond their comfort zones, do some deep soul-searching, and possibly make some tough choices and sacrifices to move toward the desired outcome.
The first contact is key to ensuring that what the client wants to focus on fits within the parameters of the coaching process. When coaching doesn’t work, it’s usually because the client wasn’t really ready to put in the effort or move beyond the comfort of what’s known. In fact, I’m rarely surprised when someone ends coaching prematurely.
Foundation construction
It is essential to define the focus of the work and identify desired outcomes at the outset. I guide clients to develop focus statements and list desired outcomes for each focus area.
We work together to craft phrases that when the client says them out loud, their eyes light up and we know we have it. Resonance The outcome phrases are written in a way that evokes what will happen if the focus is achieved. This is the fuel that helps them move forward and helps the client and coach measure success.
Creating partnerships
In my coaching practice, partnership is what makes the process work. There must be mutual trust and a sense of equality. I am their partner – not an authority, not a savior.
Together, we each bring the necessary ingredients to the table. They bring their willingness to do the work, to explore areas that may be scary, to take systematic action to move forward, and to push through inertia to continue toward the goal. I give them my full attention, and my skill set has been honed over the years. I listen “between the lines,” provide gentle feedback, and ask powerful questions that lead to insight.
Several years ago I had the chance to do an informational interview with a woman who said something that has become an intrinsic part of my personal philosophy and informs my work as a coach to this day. I believe in the unlimited capacity of people to grow and change. In my work as a life coach, I look forward to building partnerships with clients that support their personal and professional growth.
